The Gay Café

Have a great summer - Gay Café will be back in October!

What, when, why, where?

We like to offer an opportunity for everyone who feels that heterosexuality doesn't float their boat to meet once a week at the university. It's all very informal, everyone is welcome and can join us. We are looking forward to see you there!
P.S. We are hetero-friendly ;-), so bring your straight pals along!

You can find us every Wednesday (during the semester) between 4PM and 6PM (16:00-18:00) in the Asta-Cafe (H301a, next to Bistro Arche).

Apart from our weekly meetings, we also organize other events like barbecues or nightlife excursions and annual trips to the Christmas market.

If you are not sure if this is for you or you are a bit shy, you can have a coffee with us on a noncommittal basis first. Just write an e-mail, you are guaranteed to receive an answer. Don't hesitate, we don't bite :-)!

Where exactly?

The easiest way to get to the university is certainly by bus: line 9 will take you there (A or B doesn't matter, you will end up on the Gießberg anyway). Alternatively, you can also catch line 4, exit in Egg and walk to the university from there (only recommended if you know your way around). You can download the bus timetable from the Stadtwerke Konstanz.

When you've managed to get to the university, follow this way to find us: from the main entrance in the general direction of the mensa (K5). Go down the stairs where you can see the candy machines, stay on the left and leave the building at the bottom of the stairs (direction Bistro Arche). Turn left again and you'll find us around the corner in H301a.

Who exactly?

At the moment, Mr Coffee is put to good use by Dana.

Dana

She will provide you with all the coffee (or tea) you need and has an open ear for you. You can always reach her at gay-cafe@uni-konstanz.de (German, English, a little French and Russian spoken).

How do I stay up-to-date?

You can join the Gay Cafe mailing list by sending us an e-mail (please note this mailing list is in German). We will not give your e-mail address to third parties or send spam to you, promised! Also, the other members of the mailing list aren't able to see your e-mail address, so your anonymity is guaranteed.

If you wish to be removed from the list again, simply drop us a line and we won't bother you any more.

What else is there in Konstanz?

Konstanz may be small-ish, but there's plenty of stuff going on! A highlight is the annual "Tanzschiff" (dance ship) which leaves the harbor once a year (usually in July) to cruise the lake for the night.

The gay choir called "Die Wehnüsse" can be found in room K326 (below the cafeteria) at the university every Tuesday from 8PM (20:00) on. If you think you can sing - drop by, they are always welcoming newcomers!

The club for the ladies, "Belladonna", organizes a woman-only bar every Wednesday and Friday, starting at 9PM. They can also be found at the Neuwerk.

Last but not least, there is also "The Lounge". It's located in the Theodor-Heuss-Strasse 5, opening hours are Wednesdays through Sundays from 8PM to 2PM (20:00 to 2:00).

Other bars are not specifically for gays and lesbians but can be called "gay-friendly": of course the restaurant/bar "Schmitt's" (old town, Hieronymusgasse 2, opposite K9-Paulskirche), or the "Voglhaus-Cafe" (old town, Wessenbergstrasse 8, near Stephansplatz). Also worth a look is the "Einblick" (old town, Hofhalde 10, next to the Münster).

We also have an annual gay-lesbian film festival called "Que(e)rgestreift" in the Zebra-Kino (Joseph-Belli-Weg 5, Cherisy-Areal), which the Gay-Cafe helps to organize. Check out the program at www.zebra-kino.de or at www.queergestreift.de!

In July 2009, Konstanz was the location for a colorful Pride parade (called CSD here), which was completed by a festival in the Stadtgarten and a huge party at the Konzil. If you want to see what you have missed, check out www.csd-konstanz.de. See you at Pride 2011!
